The inspirational image behind the piece presents the collision of a white dwarf star and a highly variable red giant. Observed by Hubble and X-ray data from Chandra, it shows a jet from the white dwarf striking material surrounding it and creating shock waves, similar to sonic booms from supersonic planes.
